by Self-Directed Walks or Guided Tours by 4WD vehicles
We plan to do this in stages.

Self-guided Hīkoi/walk to Te TauMata

A self-guided hīkoi (walk) to what the locals call Te TauMata, a place known for its beauty and tranquillity. This is more than just a walk—it’s an opportunity to reflect, relax, and contemplate. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and take advantage of this hauora space—a place dedicated to health and well-being.

A scenic 3-hour walk to the site of the longest placename and back. The route passes through farmland, with clear signage to points of interest. Please note, that you’ll need to open and close gates, and cattle may be present along the way.

A reasonable level of fitness is required, and we recommend bringing water, wearing good footwear, and dressing warm.

    Cultural Experience: People, Land, and Environment

      Embark on a 3-hour authentic, educational, and inspirational cultural experience that weaves together the stories of People, Land, and Environment. This journey offers deep insights into local history, special places, and cultural knowledge.

      Your adventure begins at the location of the Longest Place Name sign. A 5km journey to significant cultural sites. Along the way, you’ll learn about local traditions, history, and the land itself. The tour concludes with kai (food).

      Intinerary

      1. Introduction. A brief overview of the itinerary and safety instructions.
      2. Te Maramataka ō Tamatea: Explore a special site utilised to study the night sky and discussions about aspirations and dreams.
      3. Te TauMata.  A peaceful space for reflection and contemplation, where our Kaumātua will share historical stories about Te TauMata and Tamatea Pokaiwhenua, the legendary figure. From this vantage point, you’ll view and learn about surrounding historical sites known as. The Korowai of Tamatea Pokaiwhenua.
      4. Kai and Farewell. We finish at Te TauMata shed for refreshments, sharing thoughts, and a farewell.

      Details

      • Transport: 4WD trucks over farmland (weather permitting), with some gates to be opened and closed. You may encounter cattle along the way.
      • What to Bring: Good footwear and warm clothing are recommended.
      • Availability. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (Bookings essential).
      • Introductory Price. $88 per person.
      Overnight spaces for Self-Contained Motor homes:
      $12 per night. The gate closes at 6:30 pm and reopens at 8:30 am.
